In the metaphor of change from the book Switch by Chip and Dan Heath, the elephant represents how our emotions affect our ability to change. Our emotional response to change can be the source of either tremendous resistance or motivation.
When I deliver this training, I share a personal story from my life in 1994 and 1995. In a period of six short months, I left the United States Air Force, started a new job, quit that job, moved to Oklahoma to start graduate school, and my daughter was born. That’s a lot of significant change in less than a year.
I share that story in this brief clip, which I hope you will take the time to watch. A point I make at the end – always remember that the things you say to others have the potential to change the trajectory of someone’s life. It happened to me.
