Student Branding Achievement – Spring 2013

July 1, 2013

In the spring of 2013, I taught social business and personal branding to about 75 undergraduate and MBA students at The University of Nevada. My students learn how difficult it is to take responsibility for an online presence by trying to create relevant content that matters to some target audience or market. Each student created about 25 blog posts and a final video to articulate their brand that was posted at their blogs.

CaptureThe video is a very challenging assignment for my students because I give them virtually no direction on how to do it. I set some parameters (e.g. must be 3-5 minutes) and give them my evaluation criteria, but provide little if any training on how to create a video. This is intentional, because I’ve found that the more I say about how to do this assignment, the more I constrain the creative potential of the outcome. Over the past few years, my students have produced some amazing videos. My favorite video of all time was made a few semesters back by my undergraduate student, Mike Alt.

I continued to see some very good work this semester. Below are the highlights from both my undergraduate and MBA students.

I hope you take the time to watch a few of them. Please share your thoughts in the comment section below!

This one is from my undergraduate student, Janelle Batista

Undergraduate student Daniel Berner put a lot of effort into this video

My MBA student Cindy Elkins not only made an exceptional video, she also created an impressive blog.

Here is a great video from MBA student Robin Penning that highlights the beauty of living on Lake Tahoe

This video by MBA student Brin Reynolds should really help him with his photography business

These are wonderful! I just finished Janelle’s. It’s hard to believe that this was done by an undergrad and not a professional media company. Great content and format. I’ve bookmarked this page so I can return to watch the rest. You must be so proud of your student, Bret. I’m so impressed with the quality of their work.

I will definitely watch them all, Bret. I’m saving them so I have time to savor them. It’s reaffirming to see the thoughts and talent of our future leaders.
