Remarkably Social: CDBG Forum Presentation

August 11, 2010 by Bret L. Simmons · Filed under: Leadership

I am speaking this morning at the annual Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Forum, sponsored by the Nevada Commission on Economic Development.  I am going to make the case that social media is a strategic imperative for leaders of any organization, then I am going to explain the basic operating principles of social engagement.

If you think social media is only about marketing, you are missing the big picture. Understanding what people are doing with social technologies and why they are doing it is a strategic leadership issue. We are living through nothing short of a revolution in how people communicate that has tremendous implications for your organization. If you are willing to give yourself permission to do things others are not willing to do, these are time of tremendous opportunity.

The rules of competition are being fundamentally re-written in many industries. If you will engage in social media, you can become part of the conversation about what the new rules of the game will be in your industry. The people that make the rules will always have an advantage over those don’t.

If you and your organization sit out this social media revolution, you are essentially allowing others both to create the new rules of the game, and then to give you permission to play by their new rules. The best you will ever be able to achieve is competitive parity.

It is still very early. The time to engage is NOW!
