Student Branding Blog: Discretion

May 12, 2010 1 Comment

This is the first time you’ve seen back-to-back Student Branding Blog posts from me, but they needed a post for today and I had one ready, so here it is! This post is entitled “Discretion.” Discretion in personal branding means that you can demonstrate responsible decisions and behavior as you operate online.

I love social media and especially blogging because I have the freedom to say what I want when I want to say it without having to check with a gatekeeper. But with this freedom comes great responsibility. We should always have the courage to say what we think needs to be said, but we have to deploy that courage with the intention to help and never to hurt. For example, sometimes it is OK to name names, and sometimes it is not. Discretion means you assume full responsibility for making a good faith effort to care about the difference between constructive challenge and reckless pontification.
