ACT Change: Changes Self and System

December 29, 2009 by Bret L. Simmons · Filed under: Leadership, Video

The tenth and final principle of Advanced Change Theory (ACT) is change self and system.  This is the foundation of the ACT system of change. New capabilities and new potential for action arise only from the painful confrontation of our existing routines and patterns of behavior.

A key point in ACT is that revolutionary power follows from the practice of reflection, self-examination, and the creative enactment of clear principles. When a person enacts principle-driven behavior, it challenges the current system and forces people to choose between what it expedient/easy and what is the right thing to do. This kind of awareness separates people and generates conflict.  It alters everyone, including the leader of change. (p. 155).

This kind of change takes courage to practice, and courage develops only to the extent that we practice it.  If we don’t practice these principles as followers, we will never practice them when we are given the privilege to lead.

People are watching you, and your circle of influence is larger than you think.
