Angie Chaplin is a certified facilitator for The Leadership Challenge, based on the best selling book of the same name by James M. Kouzes and Barry Z. Posner. I am a huge fan of their work, which I believe is some of the best material available on leadership. I am THRILLED that Angie graciously agreed to make this video for me to share with you.
In this video, Angie gives an overview of the Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership:
- Model the Way
- Inspire A Shared Vision
- Challenge the Process
- Enable Others to Act
- Encourage the Heart
Notice that these are practices, which is good news for us because it means leadership is a behavior that all of us can learn and develop. The things Kouzes and Posner write about these practices are full of both research evidence and practical wisdom. In future videos (I hope!), Angie will cover each of these five practices in more detail.
So PLEASE watch Angie’s video and give her some support in the way of comments. Thanks, Angie!!!

I agree that leaders must always lead by example and “practice what they preach” to foster mutual respect and trust with those they are leading. It is also very important to empower others to do their best work by holding them to high standards, showing them you believe in them, and giving them the tools they need to act with autonomy and leadership in their own right. Great job to Angie for laying out these principles clearly and concisely!
